Frequently asked
Everything you might want to know before giving books, getting books, or pitching in.
How do I donate books?
Send us a note at info@booksinhand.org or call 510-592-8090. We'll arrange a drop-off, or a pickup if you've got a large collection.
What kinds of books do you accept?
Just about anything readable: fiction, nonfiction, children's books, textbooks, reference, cookbooks, and more. If someone would be happy to receive it, we'd be happy to rehome it.
What condition do books need to be in?
Good, readable condition. We can't take books that are moldy, water-damaged, heavily marked, or missing pages, but everyday shelf wear is perfectly fine.
Are my donations tax-deductible?
We're a California nonprofit. Federal 501(c)(3) status determines whether gifts are tax-deductible. [TEAM: confirm current status and EIN, then state it plainly here.]
What happens to the books after I donate them?
Every book is sorted by hand and matched to a reader who wants it, whether that's an individual, a classroom, a library, or a literacy organization. Nothing is resold for profit, and good books don't end up in the trash.
Can I get books from you, and who qualifies?
Yes. Readers, teachers, libraries, and literacy groups are all welcome. Reach out and tell us what you're looking for, and we'll see what's on the shelves.
Do you offer pickup for large collections?
For bigger donations and estates, we can usually arrange a pickup. Get in touch and we'll work out the details.
